IUM/UNAM Hold Joint Computing Research Workshop
The IUM Faculty of Information Technology and Systems Development (ITSD) held a joint paper writing research workshop recently with UNAM as a way to improve the research capacity of its respective Faculty staff members.
The 20 participants included lecturers from the IUM Faculty of ITSD and UNAM’s Department of Computer Science.
Prof Agnes Van Dyk, Dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences at IUM kicked off the day’s session with a presentation on the best practices of research supervision. She emphasized the importance for supervisors to employ the ‘helicopter’s ability’ skill in order to reach each student under their supervision.
Prof Oladele Arowolo, Professor of Social Sciences and PhD Programme Coordinator at IUM underlined the need for various Faculties to have a clearly defined research agenda and the need for lecturers to always balance teaching, research and community service.
Professor Nicola Bidwel, a Computer Science Professor from UNAM concluded the session with a discussion on paper writing in Computing. She also highlighted the importance of producing research publications in a University, as it contributes significantly to the growth of the university and individual lecturers.
