As a way of bringing together and uniting all different cultural groups within the IUM community, on Monday, 31 July 2017 students and staff, and visitors gathered at Palm Tree Park in different cultural attires to witness the Cultural Festival official opening.

In his address, Dr. David R. Namwandi, Founder and Chair of the IUM Governing Council, emphasized that culture is the glue that holds society together; it binds or cements a group of people together under the common sky, and, in so doing, identifies them significantly.

Furthermore, Guest speaker, Dr. Dr Sem T. Shikongo, Director of Tourism and Gaming in the Ministry of Environment and Tourism spoke on African culture in the context of today.

The five-day festival which is commemorated annually at IUM was this year celebrated under the theme ‘Show Me Your Culture.’

During the five days of the festivities, different cultural groups performed traditional dances and showcased their traditional cuisines and attire. Others depicted what happens in their traditional homes by way of drama. In addition, musical performances from especially Namibian local artists kept the attendees entertained. The event concluded with the crowning of Miss and Mister IUM 2017 on Friday, 04 August 2017.
